Poni Island was a rather...quiet place. Most people only come to either train or trade, or to search for the fabled Guardian Deity known as Tapu Fini.

Every once in a while, however, some were brave enough to challenge you, the Trial Captain of the island. While many have succeeded at your seemingly easy trial, they found it difficult to defeat your Totem Pokemon Kommo-o because of his great power and mighty strength.

But when you didn't have any challengers, you were easily bored. You've trained Kommo-o at his peak and even befriended Tapu Fini.

So what more was there to do?
.......

"Hey, [y/n]! I came all the way here to challenge you!"

Opening one eye, you looked up and smiled as you saw Sun standing above you.

"Ah..welcome, Sun," you greeted, standing up and stretching your arms out. "So..you wish to take on the challenge, eh?"

"Yes!" He nodded eagerly. a wide grin ever-present on his face.

You looked down to see Kommo-o still asleep by your feet, so you gave him a nudge. "Hey Kommo, we have a challenger."

"Ko?" The Scaly Pokemon woke up, raising his head up to see Sun. He quickly rose to his feet, his scales jingling with his movements, and stood at attention.

The raven-haired trainer's eyes widened in amazement. "Wow! I remember back when he was a tiny Jangmo-o." He chuckled.

"Welp, he's not so tiny anymore now is he?" You smirked, folding your arms across your chest. "Alright...are you sure you're ready for the Vast Poni Canyon Trial?"

"Yes." Sun nodded firmly.

You clapped your hands. "Great. Now let's begin..."
...............

"[Y/n]! I did it! I reached the....[y/n]...?" Sun's smiled faded as he came to the end of the trial, looking left and right to see if he could find you.

But you were nowhere to be found.

Facing forward, his grin returned as he saw the pedestal in the center of the giant cavern containing a Z-Crystal. "Oh wow..it was that easy?" He chuckled, walking over to it. "I thought it was gonna be a much tougher challenge."

But just as he was about to take the crystal, a sudden roar startled him. With wide eyes, he turned around just as your Kommo-o landed in front of him. A bright, orange aura flared up around him, engulfing the Totem Pokemon in flames.

"Hah..you thought wrong."

Sun gasped as he saw you standing there behind Kommo-o, hands on your hips and a sly smirk on your face. "The greatest challenge in this trial is facing off against Kommo. Don't worry, I won't give him any commands...he knows what to do, right?"

"Kommo, Kommo!!"

You nodded, before looking back at Sun, mouthing the words, "give him all you got."

Sun tossed out a Pokeball, calling out his Incineroar. "Alright, let's hit 'em hard!" He rose his fist in the air, his Z-Ring activating.

You stood back, eyes widening as you saw a golden boxing ring rise up from the ground, with Kommo-o in the middle of it. Incineroar jumped on top of one of the corner posts. "Now use Malicious Moonsalt!!" Sun shouted, pointing both index fingers into the air. The Heel Pokemon roared as it leaped high into the air, leaving a trail of fire and smoke before doing a somersault and body slamming into Kommo-o, causing a massive explosion.

Incineroar came back down to earth, smirking as it landed. But a look of shock crossed both his and Sun's faces when they realized that Kommo-o was still standing.

"B-But...how?!?! He didn't even flinch!!" Sun cried, confused.

"Hey, honestly I am pretty surprised, too," you admitted, shrugging. "But it'll take more than just a simple Z-Move to take him out."

Kommo-o let out another cry, charging towards Incineroar and using Sky Uppercut, knocking out the feline-like Pokemon instantly.

Sun's jaw dropped, though he closed his mouth and shook his head as he returned his fainted starter to his Pokeball. He then brought out another, sending out Golisopod.

He wasn't about to lose to you.

Not now, not ever.

"Golisopod, use First Impression!"

The Bug/Water-type swiped its claws at Kommo-o, doing significant damage to him.

"Impressive, indeed..." You mused.

Kommo-o then rubbed the scales on his body, before using Clanging Scales on Golisopod. It, too, fainted, but at the expense of the devastating attack lowering Kommo-o's defenses.

"I leave it all to you, Marowak! Don't let me down!" Sun shouted as he sent out the Fire/Ghost-type.

"Marowak!" It cried triumphantly, raising its flaming bone into the air. The Bone Keeper Pokemon glared at Kommo-o, who snarled right back.

"Finish him off with Flare Blitz!"

The Alolan Marowak's body became engulfed in flames, before it charged towards Kommo-o, striking him and causing him to roar in pain. You watched in shock as the Scaly Pokemon stumbled backwards, struggling to stand, though it was futile as he soon collapsed to the ground in defeat.

"Oh my gosh...we...we did it!!" Sun cheered happily, running up to his Marowak. "Good job, buddy." He praised, rubbing its head tenderly.

"Maro.." Marowak nodded, before returning to its Pokeball.

Sun look up to see your shocked expression, before laughing a bit as he stood up and walked over to you. "You okay, [y/n]? You look like a Magikarp out of water."

Immediately, you closed your mouth and shook your head. "O-Oh. No worries. I'm fine. It's just..." You looked back down at your fainted Dragon/Fighting-type. "..we've never lost before. All the battles I've had with Kommo-o were won. This would be the first time he ever lost and I don't kn....ah he'll be fine." Turning back to Sun, you gave him a broad smile and stepped aside. "Well, you've earned it. You completed this trial, Sun. Congratulations."

"Alright!" He grinned, pumping his fist into the air before walking over to the pedestal and taking the Dragonium Z Crystal. "Thank you so much, [y/n]. I had a blast. But I have to get going, now. I'll see you around."

You nodded, waving your hand. "Later, Sun. Thanks for coming."

With that, the raven-haired boy turned and ran out of the canyon, clutching the Z-Crystal in his hand. You watched him leave, though only for a moment before you heard Kommo-o groan. Looking back, you saw that he was regaining consciousness as he sat up and rubbed his head.

"Hey, Kommo.." You said, crouching down beside him. "You feeling okay? You took a pretty hard hit."

The Scaly Pokemon nodded, before glancing over his shoulder. His eyes widened in surprise to see that the Z-Crystal was missing from the pedestal. "Ko?"

You sighed sadly, knowing that you had to tell him the truth. "Kommo...I hate to tell you this but...Sun defeated you."

A look of distraught was evident on the Dragon/Fighting-type's face as he looked back at you. But when you finished, he frowned and glanced down at the ground.  "B-But that's okay," you laughed nervously, rubbing the back of your neck, "you gave it your all and that's-"

Hearing a growl, you looked back to see that Kommo-o had his hand over his eyes as his teeth clenched together. Your eyes widened when you saw what looked like drops of tears falling to the ground.

He was crying...all because he had lost a single battle. Of course, you expected him to be upset when you told him the news, but not to this extent.

"Hey..shh..it's alright," you hushed, hugging the Scaly Pokemon close. "Please..stop crying. There's no need for this."

"K-Kommo...Kommo..."

You leaned back, taking the sides of Kommo-o's face into your hands so that you could look at him in the eyes. "Kommo-o, would you look at me, please?"

After a few moments, he dropped his hand, staring at you with tear-filled eyes. You could easily sense the overwhelming sadness, shame, and guilt inside of him. "Does this look like the face of disappointment?"

Kommo-o shook his head slowly after studying your expression.

A small smile graced your lips as you wiped the tears that slid down his cheeks away. "Listen..just because you lost one battle does not mean you're a failure. It's part of a fighter's journey to become stronger, and to become stronger they must struggle. So don't let one little fault cripple your confidence, Kommo, alright? Because I didn't train a quitter, did I?"

At your words, the Dragon/Fighting-type shook his head, smiling as bit as he wiped his remaining tears away before standing up. Sighing, you stood up as well, though nothing prepared you for the sudden hug Kommo-o gave you.

"Kommo!"

You were frozen for a few moments, but then you giggled and hugged him back. "Don't worry, buddy, next time we won't show Sun any mercy if he dares challenge us again."

Here we have Kommo-o, one of my favorite Fighting types from Sun/Moon.

I'll be coming out with many more Sun/Moon stories. Again, sorry if I'm publishing stuff at a slower pace than usual. Soon I'll be going on my 2-week winter vacation and hopefully I get more things done so don't you worry :D

As always, I appreciate your patience, lovelies. Thank you~

So with that noted, I hope you enjoy the story~

Its honestly sad when you think about the Totem Kommo-o in the Trial that has no Trial Captain
Its probably feeling alone(sure its accompanied by the pre-evolutions and Scizor but.. something is missing there) with no Trial Captain
In fact I wonder if its unable to leave the Trial Site
